New Tech, New Stories – the Pioneers of Digital Publishing

Sophie Rochester

Editor, The Literary Platform

Designers, developers and forward-looking publishers are pushing the boundaries of the storytelling experience. Produced by digital design studio ustwo™, this short documentary, New Tech, New Stories – the Pioneers of Digital Publishing, provides a unique insight into the future of the book. From social reading initiatives to immersive experiences and location-based storytelling, ustwo™ speaks to UK publishers George Walkley, Michael Bhaskar, Dan Franklin, Henry Volans, writer Naomi Alderman, booktwo‘s James Bridle (oh, and The Literary Platform),  and throws light on ways new technology has shifted narrative from page to screen.

ustwo™ recently launched its PaperCut platform following on from the success of its Nursery Rhymes app. They spoke at the FutureBook Innovation Workshop in association with The Literary Platform in June 2011.

    Really nice doco, well done!

Not sure, however, that all “windows are closing”. While many certainly are, others are opening. Dymocks (Australia’s largest Bookseller), for example, is using technology to dramatically lower the cost of producing and publishing paper books (see D Publishing -http://bit.ly/rv2eej) , thereby expanding “traditional publishing” channels.

It certainly is a very interesting time for publishing.
